Programme launches at 2011 Clinton Global Initiative Annual Meeting
UWC is proud to be a first-time member of the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) and attend its 2011 Annual Meeting where it is thrilled to launch a new scholarship and mentoring program for young women from conflict and post-conflict affected countries.
UWC’s explicit aim is to foster international and intercultural understanding through a transformational educational experience. It is an organisation committed to building communities that are free from prejudice and intolerance irrespective of gender, socioeconomic, cultural, racial, religious or national backgrounds.
Mr Keith Clark, Executive Director of UWC International says, “UWC is delighted to launch this new scholarship and mentoring programme for young women from conflict and post-conflict affected countries. The scholarships will cover two years of pre-university education at any of UWC’s schools and colleges worldwide.”
Countries affected by conflict are greatly in need of ethical leaders with the skills and awareness necessary to be catalysts for change and to address the wider issues facing them, such as poverty, political, economic, and social inequalities and religious or ethnic tensions. Women have enormous potential to build more secure and peaceful societies, but often face circumstances that make it difficult if not impossible to realise this potential. UWC will identify, educate and develop a network of globally aware female leaders who will be committed to positive action and have the potential to become inspiring role models for future generations of girls and women from conflict-affected countries.
Young women of high potential will be sought from the following countries:
- Africa: Angola, Ethiopia, Libya, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Sudan, Uganda, Zimbabwe
- Asia: Timor-Leste, Sri Lanka
- Latin America and Caribbean: Colombia, El Salvador, Haiti, Honduras, Guatemala
- Europe: Armenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia
- Middle East: Afghanistan, Iraq, Israel, Lebanon, Palestine, Syria, Yemen
“The inspiring example of UWC schools and colleges demonstrate that young people understanding one another is the key to all our futures,” says UWC International President, Her Majesty Queen Noor. “When UWC was established five decades ago, it was in response to the shadow of the Cold War. I believe we are even more relevant today. The divisions may be different and are increasingly found within nations as much as between them, but our conflict-scarred world is crying out for dialogue, for understanding, for respect – for those values which we cherish as part of a UWC education.”
